This stop-motion animation video was created on-site, as part of THE STREETS OF EUROPE, group exhibition featuring new works and installations by Blek le Rat, Blu, Bo130, D*Face, Invader and Microbo.
During the week of installation prior to the opening, Blu worked day and night on this amazing installation. Documenting the step-by-step progress on his camera, the artist painted his figures moving along the walls, inside of the room in which he would be exhibiting, here at the gallery. The images were used to create the animated loop seen above. The film was projected onto one of the walls inside of the gallery’s project room, for visitors to enjoy, while the rest of the walls were left in varying stages of paint. In addition to the animated projection installation, framed drawings from Blu’s sketchbook were exhibited, as well.

We thought we’d share some images of the behind-the-scenes action during installation week for our current exhibition: THE STREETS OF EUROPE—New works and installations by Blek le Rat, Blu, Bo130, D*Face, Microbo and Space Invader. With the International group of talent in this show (the six artists listed above come from France, England, and Italy) the excitement began as work started arriving at our doorstep from locations throughout Western Europe. Then the artists arrived one by one, to settle into the space and install. Here are a few images of their progress…
Three rubic cube "phantoms" from the popular video game "Pac-Man" of the 1980s. Created by: Space Invader.
Mozaic tiles, carefully assembled by Space Invader to place in the gallery and street. The "invasion" has begun!
Here is Blek le Rat—infamous street artist and stencil pioneer—applying a few last touch-ups to his canvas.
Missed a spot!…
Most of the work by D*Face arrived ready to hang. The artist had a secondary exhibition space in the windows of DUMBO’s PowerHouse Books. Here is the stencil he made for one of his PowerHouse pieces, of the iconic NYC landmark, the Statue of Liberty.
Here we have Bo130 applying the finishing touches to one of his pieces and organizing the rest of his work.
Bo130, brush in hand, getting the background wheatpaste graphics ready to hang his work on top of.
and… presto! Here is a look at his wall, once it was completed.
Bo130 often collaborates with his partner, Microbo. Seen here together, they were both featured in this show.
Here is Microbo applying her wheatpaste…
…more, and more…
…until achieving just the right amount of coverage she desired, to hang her work on top of.
Blu worked on his room daily—from early morning, late into the night—to achieve his amazing installation.
With black and white paint, he created a progressive series of figures in motion by painting areas along the floor and wall, and then going back over them again.
He set up a camera to record every step along the way, which he then used afterwards to create his animation.
The amount of work that went into Blu’s process was incredible, and we wanted to be sure to share it with you.
In the end, he left some areas of the walls and floor painted, so that you could see the echoes of his process.
Finally, the images were compiled into a moving animation, shown on a continuous loop and projected onto a wall in the very room it was created in. Please be sure to check out Blu’s completed video animation, HERE.
While many of us here in the States were unable to travel ‘across the pond’ to attend the reception of Shepard Fairey’s exhibition at Stolen Space Gallery in London, Jonathan LeVine made a special trip to see NINETEENEIGHTYFOURIA and show his support. Here are a few photos of Jonathan, taken at the private reception, which was held on the evening of halloween.
Oh yes, and did we mention he came in costume?…
No so many people dress-up on Halloween over in the UK, which made it even funnier…
Unless of course, you count ‘Lil Red, here.
Eduardo Saretta (of Choque Cultural Gallery in São Paulo) with the lovely Amanda Fairey.
Here’s Po, posing in front of a large wall piece. Give us a big smile, say "Telletubby!"
Serious face now. Checking out the show, beer in hand.
Leaving the scene, trying to catch a handsome cab.
There sure were lots of shocked, surprised and confused expressions on the streets.
"Can I get a drink, please?"
"Somebody?… Anybody?"
And that’s when he spotted a friendly bunch of grapes, then off they went to trick-or-treat! Cheers!
For two weeks before his show Imbroglio opened, Mark Dean Veca was in the gallery, slaving away on his installation every single day. Throughout this time we recorded the progress of the installation as a custom floor was being built and the paint was being applied. We wanted to share those pictures with you.
The beginnings with Mark on the floor and artist Daniel Davidson lending his time and expertise
The first coats of orange…
The finished installation…
The happy successful artist in his finished room

As we posted in earlier news, our friends at Upper Playground and Juxtapoz brought us the East Coast leg of their "Ignite What’s Next" Art Tour this month, sponsored by SPARKS. Since the Manhattan date conflicted with our own opening event on Saturday, we decided to check out Sunday night’s event instead, at Sputnik in Brooklyn. We arrived at the Fort Greene bar, to show support for our own David Choe, joined by fellow artists Saber and Retna.
Here are some pics for those of you who missed it:
A friendly wave from Dave, taking a moment to relax before showtime.
Esao Andrews was in attendance, seen here chatting with David Choe while the party got kicked off…
…and again, at the bar.
Retna gets things started on the collaboration wall piece, while the crowd gathers ’round.
Mr. LeVine watches, while Saber takes his turn with a brush and some blue paint.
Jonathan LeVine—fan of good art—apparently not a huge fan of SPARKS.
Gotta respect these artists, they’ve been touring the East Coast non-stop. Brooklyn was only city #5 out of 8!
Our boy David Choe steps up to the plate, can in hand…
It’s not every day you get to see live painting. Especially by three talented artists like these…
…working larger than life-size, right in front of your eyes.
Saber steps back in for a second coat of blue.
Saber and David admire their collaborative work, during round-2 for Retna, as he adds his final touches of red.
On the right here is photographer Jon Dragonette, if you haven’t already seen his images, be sure to head on over to Juxtapoz and check out his excellent photo-diary of the entire East Coast tour!
There you have it kids, the final product.
Jonathan LeVine risks getting blue paint on his shoulder while posing for a photo with Saber.
The crowd definitely enjoyed themselves…
…and off they went into the night, moving on to the next city. Thanks for putting on an awesome show, guys! Come back soon!!
