JLG at SCOPE-NY 2009

Many thanks to everyone who came out to visit our booth at SCOPE NY! The contemporary art fair took place at Lincoln Center from March 4th—8th, 2009. For further info on any of the pieces exhibited in our booth, please visit the exhibition page on our website. Meanwhile, we wanted to share a few photos of Camille Rose Garcia’s beautiful installation, as well as the special programming curated by Jonathan LeVine, which took place on Sunday.

Camille hand-painted her name onto the wall to compliment the work, in lieu of formal signage.

She also painted the exterior walls of our booth, inviting passers-by to take a look inside.

We had some great vintage furniture on loan, to help display Camille’s new soft sculpture dolls.

Disconnection Disorder, the largest work in our booth (this piece is 12 feet wide)!

Here it is again, next to a bit of wall installation painted by Camille.

To create what you might call an "absinthe parlor" ambience, the dolls were placed on vintage furnishings, surrounding various works on paper, with a custom created flocked velvet wallpaper produced by Curio Wallcoverings and designed by Camille, herself.

Here’s a detail shot of that wallpaper—for further info, check it out on the exhibition page

Peppermint man was a tired little guy by the end of the fair week, but on the last day, Jonathan LeVine Gallery had some additional special programming to present to fair visitors…

On Sunday the 8th, there was a free screening of BOMB-IT, the global graffiti documentary by Jon Reiss. Followed by a panel discussion called Private Property, Public Ideas: Street Art in Transition. The moderator was: Carlo McCormick (Senior Editor of Paper Magazine). Panelists included: Jon Reiss (filmmaker), Pedro Alonzo (Independent Curator), Ron English (Artist), Steve Powers aka ESPO (Artist), as well as Marc and Sara Schiller (Wooster Collective).

From left to right: Carlo McCormick, Pedro Alonzo, Sara Schiller, Marc Schiller, Steve Powers, Ron English, and Jon Reiss

Carlo introduces Pedro, as curator of Shepard Fairey’s museum exhibition at the Boston ICA, with a little joke about the artist’s arrest on the night of the opening.

Jon Reiss discusses his experience traveling far and wide to document graffiti artists around the world for the making of his film, Bomb-It.

A slideshow of selected images was projected onto a screen behind the panel participants, while they spoke. As the two artists on the panel, Steve Powers and Ron English spoke about their work. Marc and Sara Schiller spoke about their experience running the wooster collective and a set of photos from the 11 Spring Street project, which they curated in 2006.

We’d like to express our gratitude once again to all the panelists for participating in our talk, and also a big THANK YOU to Scope for allowing us to put this wonderful group together. Finally, thanks again to everyone who came to visit us at the fair! See ya next time!!
