Jonathan LeVine Projects is pleased to present The Sublime Line, a solo exhibition by artist Julia Ibbini, who was the second place winner of the 2017 Delusional Art Competition.
A dual national from Jordan and the UK, Julia has lived most of her life in the United Arab Emirates, where her work reflects both her layered and complex multicultural experience as well as the geometry and symbolism inherent with the Middle East region. The visual vocabulary that Julia is drawn to is the language of pattern and ornament, where each line, curve, symmetry, and rhythm share ideas and stories. Ornament and pattern are used as a way to document her experience with wide-ranging sources from Islamic geometry, electronic music, meenakari enamel work, embroidery to topographic contour markings.
“My work sits somewhere on an intersection with digital art and contemporary craft. Complex digital design using computer algorithms and contemporary aesthetic contrasts with traditional ornament and craftsmanship resulting in highly detailed, multi-faceted pieces.”
Each work begins with a single line and a circle which are then are built into a digital unit. Once the drawings are complete, they are cut in numerous layers out of paper and mylar using a customized laser machine. The final work is finished entirely by hand with each part glued individually and juxtaposed against ink poured over mylar to create an intensity of contrast and color.
