How & Nosm are among ten artists commissioned in cities around the world to create original artwork for DKNY ARTWORKS. This special project incorporates art in public spaces and an auction on Paddle8 with proceeds to benefit Free Arts NYC, a program which provides under-served children and families with educational arts and mentoring programs. Bidding will be available online from June 12th—29th with an event at The Montauk Beach House in Montauk, NY.
The billboard by How & Nosm, titled I JUST CALLED TO SAY can be found at the intersection of 7th Avenue and 48th Street in Times Square, NYC.
In the artist’s words, “The pattern is based on one of our icons (a split face) we keep reusing. We thought it would make sense to repeat it multiple times on this project. They are the multifaceted faces (the grey faces in pyramid pattern show that as well) of our city, NYC. The black and white image we kept simple to the usual complexity of our work so the viewers can decipher the image and feel connected to it. The black and white image is a character playing a love song (instrument and a heart) transmitting his message via telephone to his fellow New Yorkers (represented by the many faces in the background). The character is supposed to be an individual in a sea of the people of New York City. Although there are so many people in the city, the individual can still find himself (or herself) alone sometimes and in need of love."
ABOUT DKNY ARTWORKS
The former DKNY mural on Houston Street became a New York City icon and unofficial entrance to the SoHo neighborhood from 1992 to 2008, capturing the spirit and the skyline of Manhattan. This summer, DKNY brings the iconic logo back completely reimagined with the #DKNYARTWORKS project. Ten commissioned artists in ten international cities were asked to create original artwork framed within the letters of the DKNY logo, reinterpreting the iconic SoHo wall through their own unique artistic perspective, inspired by New York City.
#DKNYARTWORKS is a global collection of outdoor art installations designed to connect DKNY, New York and art within ten cities around the world. Each original work captures an artistic expression of the New York City skyline within the frame of the DKNY logo, bringing New York to the world.
